Why Children Need to be Bored

Cast your mind back to a child in your setting last week. Were they ever just... doing nothing? Staring out of the window, lying on the carpet, sitting quietly with no obvious purpose? And if so, what was your instinct — to redirect them, to offer an activity, to make sure they were engaged?

If you felt an urge to fill that space, you're not alone. We live in an era of enrichment. Every moment of a child's day can be scaffolded, resourced, stimulated and planned. The early years workforce is under pressure to demonstrate learning at all times. Ofsted wants evidence of intent, implementation and impact. Continuous provision is expected to be purposeful. There is rarely space in the day for purposelessness. Parents expect their child to be engaged in a focused learning activity at every minute of the time that they are in childcare as parents demands are steadily increasing.

But what if that space — that apparent emptiness — is actually one of the most important things we can offer?

The research is unequivocal: unstructured, undirected time is not wasted time. It is, in fact, the time during which some of the most sophisticated cognitive, emotional and creative development occurs. This blog post explores what the science tells us — and what it means for how we think about children's days.

 

What Actually Happens in the Brain When a Child Is 'Doing Nothing'

When a child appears to be doing nothing, their brain is anything but still. Neuroscience has identified a network of brain regions called the Default Mode Network (DMN) — sometimes called the 'resting state' network — which becomes highly active precisely when we are not engaged in focused, goal-directed tasks.

The DMN was first described by neurologist Marcus Raichle and his colleagues at Washington University. Their research demonstrated that far from 'switching off' during rest, the brain activates a distinct and sophisticated network involved in self-referential thought, memory consolidation, imaginative thinking, empathy and future planning. This network is most active when children are daydreaming, mind-wandering or engaged in unstructured imaginative play.

In practical terms, what this means is remarkable. When a child is bored — when they are not being directed, stimulated or occupied — their brain is doing the following:

        Consolidating memories and learning from earlier in the day

        Building neural connections between apparently unrelated concepts

        Processing emotions and social experiences

        Generating creative and imaginative ideas

        Developing a sense of self and personal identity

Far from being empty, the 'bored' brain is engaged in some of the most complex and important cognitive work of childhood.

 

Boredom, the SEEKING System and the Drive to Create

Neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp identified seven primary emotional systems in the mammalian brain. Of these, he argued that the SEEKING system — the brain's fundamental drive for exploration, curiosity and engagement — is the most important for learning and development.

Panksepp demonstrated that the SEEKING system is activated not by stimulation, but by the anticipation of stimulation — by the state of not-yet-having, of open possibility. It is the neurological engine of curiosity. When children are left without a prescribed activity, the SEEKING system activates, driving them to explore, create, investigate and imagine. Over-stimulation — too much provided, too much directed — actually suppresses this system, reducing the intrinsic drive to learn.

This finding has profound implications for early years practice. Every time we rush to fill a child's unoccupied moment, we may be inadvertently interrupting a neurological process that is fundamental to their development. The discomfort of having nothing to do — of being bored — activates the very system that drives children to make something, explore something, become something.

Think back to your own school days. Playtime meant a large, mostly grey yard — no equipment, no adult direction, no planned activity. Just space.

And yet from that apparent emptiness, something remarkable happened. We created. We collaborated. We invented games from nothing, negotiated rules on the spot, fell out and made up, built imaginary worlds from tarmac and fresh air. We were, without knowing it, engineers of our own play.

And what fun we had.

Peter Gray and the Decline of Free Play

Psychologist Peter Gray has spent decades researching the relationship between free, unstructured play and children's mental health and development. His findings are both compelling and deeply concerning.

The Decline of Play and the Rise of Childhood Anxiety (Gray, 2013)

Gray's analysis of longitudinal data from the 1950s to the 2010s found that as rates of free, self-directed play declined, rates of anxiety, depression and narcissism in children and young people rose significantly. He argues that free play — play without adult direction, rules or purpose — is not a luxury but a biological necessity. It is how children learn to manage risk, negotiate with peers, solve problems, regulate emotions and develop resilience. When it is removed or crowded out, the consequences are serious and lasting.

Gray's work is particularly relevant for early years practitioners because it challenges a fundamental assumption of our sector: that more adult involvement means better outcomes. In fact, he argues the opposite. Children need time that belongs entirely to them — time with no learning objective, no scaffold, no facilitated adult interaction. They need, in short, to be bored.

This does not mean abandoning children to emptiness. It means trusting that when a child is left to navigate their own time, they will find their way to something meaningful — even if that something looks, to adult eyes, like nothing at all.

 

Flow, Creativity and the Importance of Self-Directed Time

Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi introduced the concept of 'flow' — a state of deep, intrinsically motivated engagement in which a person is fully absorbed in an activity that matches their skill level and challenges them appropriately. Flow is associated with the highest levels of creativity, learning and wellbeing.

Flow cannot be engineered from the outside. It cannot be created by an adult providing an activity, however beautifully resourced. It emerges when a person chooses their own challenge, pursues it at their own pace and finds their own meaning in it. For children, the conditions for flow are created most reliably not by elaborate provision, but by unstructured time and space. The child who sits 'doing nothing' for twenty minutes before becoming completely absorbed in constructing an elaborate den is moving through the conditions that make flow possible.

Ferre Laevers, whose Involvement Scale is widely used in early years settings, understood this intuitively. A child scoring 4 or 5 on the involvement scale — fully absorbed, deeply engaged — has almost always arrived there through their own motivation, not through adult direction. The role of the environment and the practitioner is to create the conditions; the role of the child is to find their own way in.

What This Means for Your Practice

None of this means removing resources, abandoning continuous provision or sitting back while children struggle. It means something more nuanced and, perhaps, more challenging: learning to be comfortable with the appearance of emptiness.

Here are five things you can do in your setting tomorrow:

        Protect at least one period of genuinely unstructured time each day — no adult-led activity, no directed choice, just time and space.

        Resist the urge to redirect a child who appears to be doing nothing. Observe instead. What do you notice in their face, their body, their eyes?

        Notice when a child transitions from apparent boredom to absorbed engagement. How long did it take? What did they choose? What does that tell you about their interests and schema?

        Reflect on your own discomfort with children's unoccupied time. Where does it come from? Is it about the child, or about your own need to demonstrate purposeful learning?

        Share this research with parents and colleagues who question the value of 'free time'. The science is on your side.

 

A Final Thought

Albert Einstein reportedly said that his best ideas came not when he was working, but when he was shaving. The writer Graham Greene kept a dream diary. The composer Beethoven took long, solitary walks. The pattern — across centuries and disciplines — is consistent: the mind that is allowed to wander generates the insights that focused effort cannot.

Children are no different. The child staring at the ceiling is not wasting time. They are doing something that no amount of carefully planned provision can replicate. They are thinking their own thoughts, following their own curiosity, finding their own way to their own meaning.

Our job, perhaps, is simply to trust that — and to protect the space in which it happens.
